The adults didn’t respond well to her being smart and sassy, “Uh-uh, don’t you talk back smarty pants or you’re going to get a spanking!”
She learned fast to stay hush-hush externally, but internally she ruled like a queen. In her world, she transcended the epitome of rulership. A sign stood on the edge of her kingdom scrawled with just two words, “NO TYRANTS!”. Here yelling was a disgrace, power was encouraged and happiness a must.
No adults seemed to ever understand, but animals did. Animals, be it a cat or a dog, were drawn to her like a moth to a flame. They were companions for life, and seemed to understood the role of guardian to the queen. They enjoyed her being smart and sassy, and her happy power made them feel like mighty beasts of the jungle. Together they conquered all.
Unfortunately, the pets could only be with the queen for a certain amount of time before they crossed the rainbow bridge. At night, she looked for them in the stars, and was often sure she saw them in the sky with crowns upon their heads and scepters in their paws.
Because to her, no kingdom was ever far, far away.
